Topcoat collaborate with local industry to perform works in Mount Gambier

10.06.2020

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) recently contracted Topcoat Asphalt to undertake resurfacing works on a 3.8 kilometre section of the Jubilee Highway between Penola Road and Dohle Road in Mount Gambier from late May to early July 2020. The resurfacing works aim to improve ride quality for road users and preserve the road surface for years to come.

To facilitate the delivery of the works and support local business, Topcoat Asphalt partnered with Gambier Earthmovers (GEM) whereby Topcoat co-located their recently refurbished mobile asphalt plant beside the GEM production plant in their Mount Gambier depot. To service the project technically, Topcoat established an annex laboratory at the GEM site and obtained NATA accreditation for the facility to sample, test and report on both Topcoat and GEM mixes. The collaboration has resulted in significant local product being utilised on the project, including quarry materials, cartage contractors for the raw materials, profiling / removal of the old pavement and the new asphalt supply. The project further supported local business through the accommodation, supplies and services for the Topcoat project team and various subcontractors that mobilised from their Adelaide base. SMS Geotechnical also supplied asphalt core sampling and local hire company Baxters supplied equipment hire.

This collective and cooperative opportunity for local industry participation to the project, highlights the Government’s priority in supporting rural communities and South Australian business.
