About Us

A privately owned family company established in 1990 manufacturing and placing asphalt. Topcoat Asphalt has progressively grown to be one of the largest asphalt manufacturers in South Australia.

 

Topcoat Asphalt is located at 50-54 Millers Road, Wingfield, South Australia, and employs some 40 people.

Daniel Rensburg-Phillips
General Manager

Daniel joined Topcoat in September 2019. He is responsible for all aspects of sales and marketing with direct oversight of estimating and tendering. He is passionate about customer service and quality outcomes.

Nic Scappatura
Operations Manager
Nic Scappatura is the Operations Manager at Topcoat Asphalt. With nearly 20 years of experience in construction, civil infrastructure, utilities, and the heavy industrial sectors, Nic brings a wealth of operational expertise to the team. He oversees production, contracting, laboratory, and asset management, ensuring that all business functions work seamlessly to achieve optimal outcomes for our clients.
Gail French
Office Manager

Gail commenced as Office Manager with Topcoat Asphalt in September 2008. Gail has more than 30 years experience in office management roles, including office management for a publicly listed company. She is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day administration of Topcoat Asphalt. Gail oversees the Administration staff and reports directly to the General Manager. Gail is a member of the Australian Institute of Credit Management.

Matt Waters
Commercial Manager

Matthew joined Topcoat in 2021 and offers 15 years’ experience in the Australian civil construction and bituminous surfacing industries. Matthew commenced his career in 2009 with an Adelaide based civil construction firm and has successfully performed both operational and administrative appointments.

Matthew leads the commercial and pre-contract functions of Topcoat, and specialises in pavement construction methods, pre-contract negotiations, and business performance optimisation. Matthew’s core areas of expertise are constructability and the estimating, commercial, and financial functions of a construction business.

Matthew is a Graduate of The University of South Australia, and holds a post graduate certificate in Business.

Our Birth

With a very modest beginning… Topcoat Asphalt commenced its operations in 1990 with a 60 tonne per hour drum plant.

2001
120 Tonne Plant

In September 2001 Topcoat Asphalt commissioned a new 120 tonne per hour state of the art batching plant constructed in the Wingfield workshop under the direction of Fabri Cicconi. The batching cycle is an automated and computer controlled process and, in combination with experienced batch plant operators and on-site testing facilities, achieves the quality and standard expected by our clients.

2002
Testing Laboratory

Topcoat Asphalt’s material testing laboratory was constructed and fitted out at the Wingfield premises in August 2002.

2013
250 Tonne Plant

In 2013 Topcoat commissioned a 250 tonne per hour Aesco Madsen drum plant to work in combination with our existing batch plant to provide state of the art continuous feed production including warm mix asphalt technology with high RAP production capability.

2018
Acquired by VSA Roads

Topcoat Asphalt was acquired by VSA Roads. VSA Roads is a joint venture with Colas Australia Group. VSA Roads employ over 220 staff across South Australia and Victoria and operate in the Asphalt and Spray Seal industries as well as operating a hard rock quarry in Ararat, Victoria.

2019
Upgraded Mobile Plant

In late 2019 our fully upgraded and refurbished mobile plant was commissioned into operation. The mobile asphalt plant is a highly mobile and versatile asphalt production facility and consist of 4 semi-trailer.

2020
Lonsdale Asphalt Plant Commissioned

Lonsdale Asphalt Plant was commissioned. The plant is a Benninghoven ECO 2000 Asphalt Batch Plant and was constructed with all the necessary equipment to produce both RAP and Crumb Rubber asphalt mixes.

For nearly 50 years, the Civil Contractors Federation (CCF SA) has been the peak industry body, representing, promoting and connecting the civil construction industry in South Australia. Topcoat Asphalt is a proud member since 1992.

NATA

NATA is the authority responsible for the accreditation of laboratories, inspection bodies, calibration services, producers of certified reference materials and proficiency testing scheme providers throughout Australia. It is also Australia’s compliance monitoring authority for the OECD Principles of GLP.NATA provides independent assurance of technical competence through a proven network of best practice industry experts for customers who require confidence in the delivery of their products and services. NATA formally recognises that these facilities produce reliable technical results which make the world a safer and more certain place. NATA’s work increases community confidence and trust in a facility’s services, mitigates risk, improves tendering success and facilitates trade. Topcoat Asphalt is a proud member since August 2003.

The Australian Asphalt Pavement Association

The Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) is a representative industry association with a progressive and innovative approach. It was formed in 1969 as a non-profit organisation to promote the economic use of asphalt and bitumen bound products based on sound technical and commercial grounds. Throughout its history, AAPA has maintained as its major objective the dissemination of technical knowledge aimed at continual improvement in asphalt and bitumen bound technology. Topcoat Asphalt is a proud member since October 2002.
